Heading Out for Thanksgiving or Christmas Travel? Request a Free Vacation Watch!

November 20, 2025 5:48 pm

As the holidays approach and you start planning time away for Thanksgiving or Christmas — whether you're heading out of town or simply taking a few quiet days at home — the Bridgeland Water Agency (BWA) reminds homeowners that our local law-enforcement partner is ready to help keep your home safe while you’re gone.

When you submit a Vacation Watch request, the Harris County Precinct 5 Constable’s Office will patrol your neighborhood and keep an eye on your property at no cost to you. It’s one more way to enjoy some peace of mind during the busy holiday season.

How to Request a Vacation Watch

  1. Visit the online form at the Precinct 5 Constable’s website and complete it at least 3 business days before your departure. If you’re going sooner, call dispatch at (281) 463-6666 and let them know you submitted an online request.

  2. When you submit the form, you’ll be asked for details such as:

o Will any lights be left on or set on timers?
o Will any pets remain in the home?
o Do you have an alarm system (and will it be armed)?
o Will someone authorized visit the home while you’re away (like a dog sitter)?
o Will any vehicles be parked at or away from the home?
o Who is your emergency contact in case you’re unreachable?

  3. If your travel plans change, or a new person will be entering your home while you’re gone, update the Constable’s Office accordingly.

Additional Holiday Home-Safety Tips

Notify your alarm company that you’ll be away, and designate the Precinct 5 Constable’s Office as the primary contact in case the alarm company needs to reach someone.
Use timers on lights, and vary them so your home looks occupied.
Leave a vehicle parked in the driveway, if possible—an empty driveway can signal no one’s around.
• Make sure pets are well taken care of—if a sitter remains in the house, leave clear instructions, vet info and emergency contacts.
Hire a house sitter or ask a trusted friend to stop by, collect packages and mail, and keep the home looking lived in.

Don’t Forget the Mail Hold

One of the simplest things you can do is to prevent your mailbox from overflowing—which is a clear signal to burglars that no one’s home. Here’s how to do it:

• Visit the USPS website and request a Hold Mail. You’ll need your address, departure and return dates, and identification information.
• USPS will hold your mail at your local post office and deliver it when you get back.
• Alternatively, ask a trusted neighbor to collect your mail and newspapers while you’re away, or stop delivery of the newspaper.

Combining a mail-hold with the Vacation Watch service gives your home an extra layer of protection during the holidays.

Why It’s Worth It

The holidays are a time to relax and reconnect with family, friends and traditions. By proactively requesting a free Vacation Watch and placing your mail on hold, you help ensure that your home remains safe while you’re enjoying the season. Let the BWA and our law-enforcement partner look out for your property so you can look out for what matters most.
